Obedience in Marriage

Sunny D

Marriage is a sacred vow between man and woman. Most of us know and enjoy the benefits of a healthy marriage but what if you are in a marriage filled with disappointments? Throughout my twenty-nine plus years of marriage, my husband and I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. Our marriage had more of its share of troubles. We’d stopped spending time together. We’d lost our affection for each other. We started holding back and concealing our feelings. During the difficult times in our marriage, it was easy for us to emphasize on our problems instead of asking God to help us.

There were many times that I wanted to take the easy way out and file for divorce. I am so thankful that I didn’t go that route. God is in the center of our marriage. My husband and I cherish each other. We respect one another. Our marriage is now stronger than ever! I know you are wondering how we turned our marriage around. Well…we had to put in some work. First we started praying and fasting together. We opened the lines of communication again and we started enjoying our time together. We searched the scriptures to see what God had to say about marriage. We found lots of scriptures about marriages but my favorite is Ephesians 5:22-33 (NIV):

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

Life is really simple. Life becomes difficult when we are disobedient to God’s word. God has a perfect plan for our marriages and our lives.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, obedience does not come natural to us. We can be stubborn and so determined to have our way. There are times when we forget that your will should be done. Please help us to have an obedient heart. A heart that wants to serve and glorify you Lord in every way. Amen

Until next time…
